Banarasi silk originates from Varanasi (also known as Banaras or Benares) in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.
Historical Roots
Ancient Beginnings: Weaving traditions in Varanasi date back centuries, with early mentions found even in ancient texts like the Vedic literature. 
Mughal Influence: The craft reached new heights during the Mughal era in the 14th to 16th centuries. Persian motifs and opulent brocade techniques merged with local Indian artistry under royal patronage. 
Artisan Migration: Skilled weavers migrated to the region over time, refining techniques like intricate zari (gold and silver thread) work that define the fabric today.
